Tommy the Hamburger is here again, and this is Historical Depravity, where we dig up the polished bones of history, crack them open, and show you the rot they tried to dress up as greatness. They called these people kings, visionaries, captains of industry, patriots, reformers, whatever flattering bullshit helped the blood dry faster. I'm here to show you what they actually were. Joseph Goebbels still gets discussed, in far too many supposedly clever rooms, as if he were primarily a media genius. That is the polished version. He becomes the brilliant propagandist, the master of mass communication, the man who understood narrative, emotion, spectacle, and repetition better than anyone around him. You see this filth in lazy comparisons, in marketing chatter, in people who say "Goebbels like" with a weird professional admiration tucked underneath. That framing is rotten. Goebbels was not interesting because he was good at messaging. He was historically depraved because he used propaganda as an instrument of moral demolition, turning hatred into common sense and murder into public duty. That is the myth versus reality split. The myth says communications innovator. The reality says architect of extermination culture. The myth says manipulator of public opinion. The reality says a man who helped build the psychological and political atmosphere in which genocide could be accepted, rationalized, and even celebrated. The myth says his craft is what matters. The reality says the craft mattered because it was fused to annihilation. You do not understand Goebbels if you treat propaganda as mere lying. Lies matter, obviously, but this was more than lying. Goebbels helped create an entire moral language in which Jews, political enemies, disabled people, and other designated targets could be seen not as neighbors or human beings but as contamination, threat, disease, burden, sabotage, decay. That transformation is one of the central mechanisms of mass atrocity. People are much easier to strip, deport, starve, shoot, gas, and erase after they have been rhetorically demoted below full humanity. That demotion was not accidental background noise to Nazi rule. It was policy. It was one of the essential preconditions of the whole machine. You need rail schedules and camp administration and police terror, yes. You also need millions of people trained to hear eliminationist language without flinching. You need ordinary citizens, officials, readers, listeners, teachers, artists, and clerks to absorb a poisoned vocabulary until it feels normal. Goebbels's ministry existed to make that poison feel like atmosphere. Once hatred feels ambient, murder stops sounding like rupture and starts sounding like administration. That is why the "genius" talk should piss you off. Genius toward what end? Elegant slogans in service of crematoria are not an intellectual achievement. They are moral sewage with style. Goebbels did not merely persuade Germans to support a party. He helped rearrange the emotional furniture of a whole society so that cruelty felt necessary, suspicion felt patriotic, and extermination felt thinkable. Fuck me sideways, there is nothing academically cute about that. And yes, propaganda under him reached into every medium the regime could bend: newspapers, radio, film, publishing, theater, ritual, public celebration, state aesthetics, censorship, and the selective destruction of alternative voices. That reach matters because propaganda works best not when it appears as one shrill voice among many, but when it starts swallowing the whole environment. Once independent sources weaken or vanish, people stop experiencing the lie as argument and start experiencing it as reality's weather. Goebbels understood that deeply. He did not simply want to spread messages. He wanted to occupy the conditions under which messages were received. That is also why censorship under him cannot be treated as some supporting detail. Censorship was not just cleanup after propaganda. It was part of the same weapon. A lie grows stronger when rival speech gets harder to find, harder to trust, and more dangerous to repeat. Books disappear. Editors adapt. Artists self censor. Publishers narrow. Teachers learn the boundaries. Journalists either align or vanish. After enough of that, public reality starts to feel preselected. People begin choosing from within a fenced field and mistake that for free judgment. Goebbels helped build that fence board by board. That occupation of the public sphere helped turn the regime's enemies into objects of disgust. Not disagreement. Disgust. That distinction matters. You can coexist with opponents. You eliminate filth. Goebbels specialized in pushing enemies across that line. Jews became vermin, infection, conspiracy, poison, deformation. Political dissidents became traitors undermining the nation from within. The disabled became burdens. Art that did not serve the regime became degeneracy. Once that sorting system is in place, brutality becomes easier to stage as hygiene. And this is where the Holocaust connection has to stay direct. Goebbels was not some floating rhetorical technician who happened to work near killers. He was part of the killing order. His propaganda did not merely accompany anti Jewish policy. It intensified and justified it. He knew what radicalization was doing. He embraced it. He pushed it. He recorded approval. He used language to help convert mass persecution into a popularly processed necessity. There are many forms of perpetration inside a genocidal state. Goebbels's specialty was to make the unacceptable speakable until it became executable. The mass rally spectacle and the pseudo religious emotional charge of Nazi politics also mattered for the same reason. Goebbels helped create experiences in which individual judgment dissolved into belonging, noise, rhythm, fear, ecstasy, repetition, and the reassurance of collective hatred. Propaganda is not only text or argument. It is also emotional choreography. It teaches people what to feel when certain enemies are named, what pleasures are attached to obedience, what shame is attached to doubt, what intoxication comes from being part of a historical mission. That work is politically powerful as hell, and under Goebbels it served a regime built on war, racial extermination, and internal terror. That emotional choreography is one of the ugliest parts because it turns politics into a moral narcotic. People stop evaluating claims and start bathing in mood. Rage feels cleansing. Belonging feels redemptive. Doubt feels dirty. Enemies feel theatrically present even when absent. Once a regime can repeatedly deliver those sensations through speeches, radio, film, and ritual, it does not just persuade an audience. It conditions one. And conditioned populations are much easier to march through escalation because each new outrage arrives already wrapped in familiarity. The victims start with the obvious millions who died inside the wider Nazi extermination project that Goebbels helped morally scaffold. But the victim field is broader than death counts, even though the death counts are enough to choke you. Add the people humiliated, isolated, dispossessed, and marked for removal long before final killing. Add the children taught to hate. Add the citizens turned into informants or moral cowards by a public world saturated with controlled fear. Add every writer, artist, publisher, teacher, and listener pushed into a culture where truth itself became punishable weakness. A society does not emerge clean from that kind of poisoning even when the regime finally collapses. And the false legacy is one of the nastiest parts. People sometimes speak of Goebbels with the same dead eyed admiration they reserve for elite advertisers or ruthless political consultants. They act as though the lesson is his effectiveness. No. The lesson is that communication talent severed from moral restraint becomes an accelerant for atrocity. If you talk about his "brilliance" without immediately dragging the corpses back into the room, you are already doing a little laundering for him. You are already letting the professional fascination soften the crime. There is another dodge too, the one that says he was merely Hitler's mouthpiece. Bullshit. He was subordinate, yes, but subordinates in exterminatory systems are not morally washed by hierarchy. Goebbels was not some gray clerk trembling beneath orders he hated. He was ideologically committed, creatively active, viciously energetic, and deeply invested in the regime's goals. The fact that he served a higher monster does not make him less of one. It just places him correctly inside a nest of them. The mechanics of censorship matter here as well. Propaganda is strongest when truth is not just contradicted but deprived of oxygen. Goebbels helped build that deprivation. Books burned. Publications were shut down or aligned. Dissenting art was stigmatized. Unapproved voices were pushed out, jailed, exiled, or silenced. The point was not only to spread Nazi stories. It was to make rival descriptions of reality harder to find, harder to trust, and riskier to repeat. That is how regimes stop having to argue. They just surround. And then there is the afterlife problem. Goebbels is dead, but the methods remain unnervingly reusable: dehumanize, repeat, aestheticize, monopolize attention, frame critics as traitors, turn lies into identity markers, and keep the emotional temperature hot enough that the audience stops caring what is true as long as the story satisfies revenge or belonging. That is part of why this file matters now. Not because every modern propagandist equals Goebbels, but because he remains one of the clearest proofs of what happens when media control, grievance politics, and eliminationist ideology lock together. That is also why people should stop using him as a cute benchmark for mere spin. The second you reduce Goebbels to "really effective messaging," you have already trimmed the moral charge off the lesson. His significance is not that he won attention. It is that he helped make extermination emotionally and socially workable. The modern warning is not "be careful of persuasive branding" in some bloodless sense. The warning is that sustained dehumanization plus media control can turn whole populations into easier targets while much of the surrounding public learns to call the process normal. If you want the mechanism in one sentence, here it is: Goebbels used total media power and relentless dehumanization to help turn mass murder from a radical project into something millions could absorb as normal, necessary, or righteous. That is why he belongs here. Not because he was simply a liar, and not because rhetoric alone killed the victims, but because genocidal regimes need men who can make extermination feel morally permissible before the machinery fully starts. The myth says Joseph Goebbels was a dark communications genius. The truth says he was one of the principal moral sewer workers of the Nazi regime, helping lay the language, imagery, and emotional conditioning that made genocide easier to carry out and easier for many to endure without revolt. Strip away the professional fascination, the media theory perfume, the grudging respect for "effectiveness," and what remains is a propagandist whose real achievement was helping teach a society to look at human beings and see targets. That is the depravity on record. The myth is smaller now, the stink is stronger, and the body count is still the body count. See you in the next grave I have to dig up.
