Nothing is standalone, nothing is self sustaining, and the moment you see the chain clearly, is the moment the comfort hidden right the fuck in front of your face starts rotting off. Water is one of the dirtiest hidden dependencies in modern life because it feels natural right up until it starts acting like infrastructure again. You turn the handle. It comes out. Cold, hot, flushes, drains, fills, rinses, cooks, cleans, disappears. The whole thing feels so ordinary that people start treating water like a property of the building or even a property of the planet itself, as if the faucet were some little indoor spring that personally loves you. Wrong. What comes out of that tap is a managed flow moving through source systems, treatment systems, pumps, pressure, valves, buried pipes, meters, drainage, electricity, and maintenance crews you will never meet unless something has already gone to shit. That is the dependency here: water as a buried service chain masquerading as nature. People think they rely on "the tap." The promise is seductive because it makes daily life feel clean and low drama. Hygiene, cooking, waste removal, habitability, all stitched together by a flow most people experience as automatic. Automatic is the lie. Let's trace it cleanly. Water starts somewhere. Reservoir, river, aquifer, well field, watershed, imported source, whatever your region is leaning on. Then it often gets collected, treated, pumped, stored, tested, pressurized, and sent through distribution lines. That is where posture starts mattering. Storage matters here in a stupidly basic way people still manage to avoid thinking about. Bottled water, filled containers, clean jugs, a bathtub reserve when a warning hits, anything that creates a little buffer between "the system hiccuped" and "the household is immediately negotiating thirst and toilet math." Same with boil notices. The water may still physically arrive and still be untrustworthy enough that every use suddenly requires extra labor, extra heat, extra time, and extra vigilance. It is a hidden chain of source management, treatment, pumping, pressure, pipes, drainage, and household handling that has to keep functioning every hour for ordinary life to feel clean and stable. The reason water failure feels so degrading so fast is that the illusion of natural ease drops away and you meet the infrastructure with your body. That's the Dependency Map.
