Nothing is standalone, nothing is self sustaining, and the moment you see the chain clearly, is the moment the comfort hidden right the fuck in front of your face starts rotting off.
People talk about "air quality" like it is just another municipal annoyance, one notch above potholes and one notch below parking. That is a cute way to avoid thinking about what the atmosphere actually is. Atmospheric composition is the chemical envelope inside which breathing, heat balance, combustion, weather behavior, photosynthesis, and ordinary terrestrial life are even possible. The dependency is not on "air" in the lazy poetic sense. It is on the atmosphere containing the right rough mixture of gases, particulates, moisture, and circulation conditions that let humans inhale without poisoning themselves, overheating the planet past planning range, or turning everyday exposure into a slow biological mugging.
That is why this belongs in the dependency map. People do not depend on atmospheric composition because the sky is pretty. At a public level the posture is clearer still. Treat clean breathable air and atmospheric stability as core civic infrastructure. And because this is the dependency map, we should say the quiet part plainly: the more degraded the atmosphere gets, the more everything else has to compensate. More filtration. More cooling. More medical care. More missed work. More crop stress. More disaster adaptation. More migration. More spending to simulate conditions that cleaner, more stable atmospheric composition used to provide for free. Civilization keeps acting shocked that the medium every lung and weather pattern depends on has downstream billing power. Fuck me sideways, of course it does. The bill lands in hospital visits, school absences, exhausted lungs, public health budgets, and whole classrooms, warehouses, buses, clinics, and offices trying to function inside air they did not consent to inherit.
So the real dependency is not on "air" in the sentimental sense. It is on atmospheric composition staying chemically and thermally functional enough that breathing remains low drama, heat remains manageable, and the rest of human systems are not constantly compensating for a medium they have fouled and destabilized. Once you see that clearly, the category stops being "air pollution is bad" and becomes "civilization is leaning on a breathable, heat regulating chemical envelope it keeps loading with damage."
And that envelope is a terrible place to test how much abuse the species can normalize.
