This is what it looks like when probability, physics, biology, and sometimes, good, old fashioned, motherfucking hubris gang up on a human body. Listen up, because every death file on my desk is a manual on how you can not get fucked the same way. The oxygen depletion welding file opens with a welder deep inside a tank, hood down, torch hissing, blue arc flashing off steel while the air around him gets worse by the minute. He thinks the fan outside is enough. He thinks he only needs one more pass on the seam. Then he lifts his head because something feels off. Not pain. Not panic. Just a slow weird fog. He reaches for the ladder and misses it. One more skilled motherfucker going down in total silence because the gas around the weld is stealing the oxygen out of the space faster than his body can admit what is happening. Test the atmosphere before entry and keep monitoring it, because the space can change while the job is underway. Ventilate properly with real airflow that actually clears the low spots instead of just making noise near the hatch. Do not weld alone in a confined space. Keep an outside attendant whose job is to monitor and react, not wander off. Stop work immediately if dizziness, confusion, or strange fatigue show up. Have retrieval and rescue gear ready before the first arc starts, not after the welder is already silent on the floor. Another defense is simple honesty about the gas. People talk about argon or shielding gas like it is harmless because it is nonflammable or because it is used every day. Harmless to the weld maybe. Not harmless to the room.
