Would You Rather · Episode 2
Lottery Face
2,120 words
Get ready, Tommy the Hamburger is about to twist your motherfucking brain. You're going to get two choices, and an examination of the fucking thought process behind both. Shit's about to get detailed and complicated, so you better pay attention.
All right. Here is the motherfucking dilemma.
Would you rather I rotate my face daily in a public lottery, or freeze my face at age twenty one while my emotions lag by two minutes? I'm standing in a cosmetic demo bunker under goddamn sponsor lights, and the whole place smells like hot plastic and stale coffee with powder caked over that sharp electrical stink you get right before expensive gear embarrasses itself. The mirrors are sweating while makeup drones keep buzzing over my head like horny little surveillance bugs, and a tech with concealer on his cuff is pretending this is normal. It is not normal. One side turns my face into public infrastructure for creepy bastards with money and software. The other side keeps my face beautiful and dead steady while my actual feelings show up late like they missed the bus.
Lottery Face is the louder horror, so let me grab that one first. Every morning starts with a screen. The glass clears and the numbers start chewing around while some rotten little beauty algorithm decides what face I have to wear that day. Maybe it hands me a new jaw and a different nose. Maybe it softens the mouth or changes the eyelids just enough to make strangers call me sweet when I am one bad sentence from ripping a speaker off the wall. That is the first violence. Not ugliness, but instability. I do not get to walk into the day already knowing what my own face does when I smirk.
And the second the lottery owns the face, every parasite in modern life lines up with a bucket. Sponsors start sniffing around for campaign rights. Then some facial recognition ghoul slithers in talking about security like his software is not just another bag of lies. Before I can even finish gagging, the identity platform bastards are already grinning over a live case study for their adaptive trust propaganda. The whole thing stinks. That is the filth hidden in the word lottery. It sounds random and playful, but it is really a daily privatization of recognition. My face stops being the thing that follows me through the world and starts being a licensed event.
The body cost is weirder than people think. It is not just embarrassment. It is that split second every morning where the mirror gives you somebody else's geometry and your stomach has to catch up. Your own grin lands wrong in the glass, and your anger sits on a stranger's mouth. You touch your cheek and the touch is yours, but the contour is rented. That disconnect would grind on the nerves fast. I know it would. By week two I would be waking up already braced, half ready to meet an enemy before I even met my own reflection.
Then the practical world gets its bite in. Phone unlock goes stupid on me, and the building scanner starts acting like I am counterfeit before I even get outside. Later the airport kiosk decides I am some kind of impostor. Some dead eyed security prick stares at my documents like I personally invented fraud to ruin his morning. The bank app freezes my account because today's cheekbones have not been approved by the machine yet. Every stupid little automated gate in the country suddenly decides I am suspicious. Fuck me sideways, that is what makes Lottery Face nasty. It does not just mess with vanity. It weaponizes bureaucracy and turns ordinary errands into hearings.
And the social damage is vicious. Friends stop getting clean reads on me, and the crew stops knowing whether I am joking or ready to throw something heavy. A woman I flirted with yesterday sees me today and has to decide whether I am lying to her or putting on some grotesque rich people performance art. Even sympathy gets warped. You cannot build normal recognition if the face keeps changing under the relationship. Trust needs repetition. Lottery Face saws straight through it.
There is false hope in it, though, and that is why the trap is strong. Part of me can feel the seduction. A bad day lands on a face I will not even be wearing tomorrow, and a humiliating meeting becomes harder to pin to one permanent look. If the system keeps shuffling me, maybe I can slip a few cages and dodge profiling. Maybe I can outrun old versions of myself because the visual trail never stays stable long enough for the vultures to nail it down. That little taste of freedom is real. It is also poisoned.
Because the same instability that helps me dodge one trap makes every decent part of life shakier too. You do not just lose the police database. You lose the private language with people who know your face, plus the little look that says I am not okay. Worse, you lose that version of yourself that could walk into a room and let one expression carry the whole message without footnotes. That is not cosmetic. That gets down in the beams. Whether he admits it or not, a man ends up living inside those tiny recognitions like a poor bastard sleeping in a crawlspace.
Still, Lottery Face leaves one thing alive that matters a lot to me. Real time emotion. If I am furious, I am furious now. If something breaks my heart, it breaks it now. The face may be random, but the timing is still mine. That counts for more than the people selling this shit will ever admit.
Now drag Forever twenty one Freeze into the light and watch the prettier trap start breathing. On paper this one looks cleaner. The face stays young. The skin stays perfect in that creepy showroom way that makes rich freaks nod like they are seeing a miracle. The sponsors clap because I turn into a skincare sermon with a pulse, and the public gets a stable Tommy to project things onto. That is the bait. It promises stability with beauty attached, then the knife twists. My emotions lag by two full minutes. So my face is not showing what I feel. My face is showing what I felt a while ago, like my nervous system got outsourced to some cheap buffering service.
That is hell. Not the cute kind either. It is real relationship wrecking hell.
If somebody insults me or says something loving while I am still carrying the wrong feeling on my face, they get a lie before they get me. If a person breaks down in front of me anywhere in that stretch, the concern does not arrive where they can see it until the moment has already curdled. You tell me how the fuck I am supposed to keep trust alive inside that. How do I comfort somebody if my face is still busy finishing the wrong scene.
The body cost here is slow and humiliating. Every conversation becomes a two track bastard. One part of me is living the moment, while the other part braces for what my face is about to do two minutes late. That means I never get to fully be in the room. I am always tracking the current feeling and the delayed leak behind it. The jaw starts tightening from anticipation. The chest never empties out right because I know some emotional aftershock is still coming down the line. Sleep would get weird too. I would lie there replaying scenes, wondering which damage came from the event and which damage came from my own lagged face making everything look colder than it was.
And the social side is worse than Lottery Face in one brutal way. Lottery Face confuses recognition, but Freeze corrupts sincerity. People can survive confusion for a while. Once sincerity gets damaged, the rot goes deeper. If my partner keeps seeing the wrong feeling at the wrong time, eventually she stops trusting the right one when it finally arrives. If my friends keep getting old reactions on delayed delivery, they stop trying to read me at all. They start talking around me instead of to me, making accommodations and pitying me while they do it. That is a slower death than public weirdness. That is the death where people stop believing your face can tell the truth.
There is false hope on this side too. It whispers that I get to keep one face and stay legible to the world. Recognition itself starts sounding like mercy. And yes, that has weight. I am not pretending it does not. There is something raw and embarrassingly human about wanting the same face tomorrow that you had today. There is peace in not waking up to a stranger in your mirror. But what good is a stable face if it has stopped being a real time witness to your life? That is the sick joke at the heart of this option. It preserves appearance by murdering timing.
And timing is not some side issue. Timing is the whole fucking difference between being there and being a mannequin with a pulse. It decides whether an apology lands when it can still help, and it decides whether danger reads as danger before the punch gets thrown. Grief has to show up where somebody actually needs to see it too. If my emotions lag, then my whole social life turns into cleanup. I am no longer having moments. I am managing mistranslations.
Then the predators start feeding on it. The cosmetics people would build a whole fake saint out of me, and before that stink even cleared the therapy parasites would already be packaging me as regulated response for the wellness freak crowd. Everybody gets something. Nobody gives me my timing back. They would put me in interviews and talk about serenity while I sit there trapped in a beautiful little lie. That is what scares me more than the lottery. The lottery humiliates me in public, but Freeze risks making me complicit in my own falseness. It would reward me for looking calm while actual feeling keeps arriving after the damage is done.
The room tells the truth before I finish deciding. The sponsor overlay starts glitching across the mirrors, and every reflection in the bunker slips half a beat off while the drones wobble overhead. One mirror shows my mouth smiling while my eyes have already gone mean. Another catches the correction late and makes me look soft again after the softness is dead. The tech drops a sponge and whispers for a reset like a reset can save this rotten idea. Then the audience feed lights up with delayed reaction cards, and the whole bunker starts feeling like a funeral for honest timing.
That is the core of the trap. Lottery Face can wreck recognition, but it still leaves my reactions alive in the moment, which is why I trust myself to survive it more than Forever twenty one Freeze, the option that keeps recognition neat while hollowing the moment out from the inside.
I choose Lottery Face.
I choose it because I would rather wake up wearing a different mask than spend my whole life wearing one beautiful face that keeps lying about what I feel. Lottery Face is bureaucratic hell with sponsorship rot soaked straight into the identity paperwork. Fine. At least when something hits me, my feeling still belongs to the same minute. My rage is current, and even my laugh is not dragging its ass in after the joke died.
Forever twenty one Freeze is worse because it turns me into a polished fucking mistranslation. It would make tender moments harder and fights dirtier. Apologies would get shakier, and comfort would arrive later than it needs to be. That is a humiliation machine for motherfuckers who think looking right matters more than arriving true. No. I will take the public lottery over the private delay line.
So let the bastard system redraw my face in public if it has to. Let the sponsors choke on the mess when the algorithm spins up a new Tommy before breakfast. I will still have my real time pulse, and that matters more than any stable piece of bone structure a room full of lying motherfuckers wants to preserve. I take one more breath of powder and hot plastic while those buzzing drones twitch overhead, and I'm still standing.
That's the fucking verdict. I made the call, and if your brain still works, you know where this lands.
