R E M Donor

Get ready, Tommy the Hamburger is about to twist your motherfucking brain. You're going to get two choices, and an examination of the fucking thought process behind both. Shit's about to get detailed and complicated, so you better pay attention. All right. Here is the motherfucking dilemma. Would you rather I let the city siphon off my R E M sleep to help power trains, towers, and every other hungry machine in the dark, or keep my dream cycles for myself while every insomnia spiral gets livestreamed to paying motherfuckers who call voyeurism support? I am standing in a dream utility room with hot copper stink in the air, and the place still reeks of old coffee with that sour hospital sweetness that says somebody cleaned up human trouble but kept the wiring. On my left there is a reclined sleep chair bolted to the floor with cables running from the headrest into a wall of meters. On my right there is an unmade cot under ring lights with a camera arm hanging over it like a bird waiting for something soft to die. One side wants to mine what happens in my skull after midnight. The other wants to sell the wreckage when sleep never shows up. The room tells the truth before either of them even opens their mouths. The chair side looks official on purpose, with a gel cradle for the head and silver teeth of electrodes laid out neat as scripture. A city logo is stamped on the base like that is supposed to make the theft feel municipal instead of personal. The floor under it is all scraped to hell from people bracing their feet before they sat down. The cot side lies in the opposite direction. The blanket is tossed just enough, there is a water bottle on the floor, and a little side table holds vitamins, tissues, and a neon sign that says stay with us. Fuck me sideways, that sign almost gets me to start throwing furniture. The city rep starts first because bureaucrats always want the first layer of bullshit on the record. He has the face of a man who thinks theft becomes noble if you say public often enough. He calls the sleep grid a shared resilience measure. According to him, dream rich brain activity produces stable pulses that smooth overnight demand all over the city, from hospitals to trains and whatever other machine appetite he thinks should matter more than my skull. He says it gently, like he is explaining recycling to a child, because that is the trick. If he talks softly enough, maybe nobody notices he is describing a power plant with my skull wired into the basement. Then the stream manager takes her turn and somehow her smile makes me hate her faster. She says my insomnia has authentic audience value. Supposedly people crave real late night companionship, and if I choose her option every sleepless spiral becomes a polished little product with enough fake support wrapped around it to keep the paying bastards feeling kind while they feed. She wants me to believe I am keeping my dreams by sacrificing only the bad nights. That is cute. That is also horse shit. If I take the city deal, they do not steal all of sleep. That would almost be honest. They want the dense moving part. They want the private storm under the eyelids, that filthy repair shift where the brain keeps chewing on damage all night until the mess is barely stackable enough to survive daylight. That is what they want because it is useful. Not mystical. Useful. The city wants the most private janitor work in my body because somebody figured out it throws a stable enough pulse to keep trains smooth and lights cheap. The body cost there is brutal the second I picture actual life under it. I still wake up, sure, but I wake up damaged. It feels like the whole body got dragged over gravel in the night and handed back late, so even the smallest thing in the morning lands crooked and personal. Enough lost R E M and the whole day starts feeling hostile in this slow sticky way, like the world got heavier just to be an asshole and my own head is helping it. The city gets clean overnight power while I turn into a twitching bastard with joints full of static. And it does not stop at fatigue. Dream sleep is where the brain drags its dirty laundry through the machine. Cut that out and all the emotional sewage stays backed up in the pipes. Nothing inside gets time to cool off, which means the ugly shit keeps its edge and the old damage never gets a chance to rot down into something manageable. I already know what thin sleep does to me after just a couple of rotten nights. It turns me into an ugly version of myself with no patience and too much fight in the system for something as stupid as a slow toaster. Stretch that over weeks and now the city is literally burning my missing repair work to keep its schedule looking tidy. The rep tries to sand the horror down with office language. He tells me donor fatigue is closely monitored and starts mumbling about tuning the draw, then lands on that diseased little line about how most participants adjust. There is always some diseased little sentence like that hiding in these systems. Adjust means the body stops begging loudly enough to make management uncomfortable. It does not mean the damage is gone. It means the damage learned who it was dealing with. I ask what happens when the dreams stop coming right. He calls dream simplification a known side effect. Simplification. That is what he calls the tearing down of the private night theater inside a human skull. Still, there is one thing about the city side that matters. The theft stays visible. It has a chair with cables and meters, and the rest of the system leaves fingerprints all over the room through paperwork and that city polish trying too hard to look respectable. If they hollow me out in the dark, I can point to the exact motherfuckers calling it service. I can shove the budget line under a camera. I can point at the chair and say there. There is the machine that fed on my sleep. Visible evil matters when you are trying not to go crazy. Then I swing back to the cot and the other option starts showing its real teeth. If I choose the insomnia stream, I keep whatever dreams I do manage to get. Fine. But every sleepless night becomes a room full of paying witnesses. Not real witnesses either, just subscribers and bastards with usernames who want the whole ugly sequence close up while my nervous system is trying to peel its own skin off. They call that support because support sounds cheaper than feeding. The manager points at her dashboard and says the audience is compassionate. Her screen has neat little labels for empathy spikes, retention windows, and all the other night confession crap she thinks sounds humane. One graph climbs when the sample clip shows me sitting still too long with both hands over my face. That is what she sells as care. She is not trying to fix the night. She is trying to optimize it. The whole arrangement teaches my worst hours to hit their marks. The body cost there is sneakier than the city version, which is part of what makes it filthier. Once the camera is live, a sleepless night stops being only an emergency. It becomes a possible performance. I can feel the trap right away, because the whole night starts bending around what plays well and anything that might actually help begins to feel bad for business. The body learns ugly lessons once money gets tied to pain. It starts dragging itself toward the profitable cliff. The emotional damage is even worse. A breakdown needs privacy if it is ever going to stay human. The second the lens appears, even real suffering gets bent by awareness. The whole body starts feeling observed in a way that poisons everything, until nothing coming out of you feels fully yours anymore and the audience is already in your head before the tears even hit. After enough nights the line melts. You do not know whether you are still surviving the spiral or just trying not to waste it. That kind of confusion rots a person right through the middle. The social side is poison in a quieter costume. Nobody wants to get caught inside the four A M unraveling, so the people closest to me start changing shape around the camera and the whole room gets lonelier before anybody even says it out loud. Friends stop coming over, and the feed starts warping the rest of life until random subscribers feel entitled to talk like they know me because they have seen the collapse close up. They say we were there for you. What they mean is they watched the night my mind almost came loose and threw little icons up the side of the screen. The manager tries to clean it up with platform language. She starts talking about moderation tools with keyword filters and wellness prompts, then throws in trained night hosts like that is supposed to make the thing smell cleaner. I want to laugh in her face so hard it breaks something. A little digital broom sweeping around the edges does not make it less filthy to package a nervous system failing in real time. One sick bastard says jump and a mod deletes it. Great. Another bastard tips five dollars when the breathing turns bad and sends a heart icon. That one stays because engagement is positive. The platform only hates cruelty that scares off future subscriptions. There is a bigger rot in the stream side too. Once insomnia starts making money, nobody with power wants insomnia fixed. Managers and sponsors profit, then the platforms take their cut while the audience profits in that cheap emotional way people do when they feel close to a stranger's disaster without ever having to actually help. A whole tiny economy blooms around the fact that somebody cannot shut his brain off in the dark. That is not support. That is building condos on a sinkhole and calling the view intimate. Then the room starts confessing without either side meaning to. One of the chair meters flickers and the rep lunges to steady it before he even checks whether I noticed. There it is. He worries about the draw before the donor. On the other side the stream manager's dashboard auto tags a test clip from some poor bastard under the lights with phrases like vulnerable and raw honesty, then slaps on some late night truth label she thinks sounds tender. That screen lights her face up like Christmas. She is not ashamed. She is excited. If I needed proof, there it is in plain sight. The city side wants the repair stripped out of the night. The stream side wants the collapse polished up for sale. Now I am pacing between the chair and the cot because both options make me want to claw the paint off the walls. The whole room feels rotten with purpose, from the low hum under the floor to that dead flat light making every face look worse, while the rep and the manager keep dressing the same insult in nicer words. Those are the pair of costumes they picked for the same basic act. It is extraction from the night either way. One strips value out of the sleeping body, and the other strips value out of the failing one. So I pressure test the actual future instead of the pitch. If I take the city deal, I lose part of myself in the dark. I come out frayed and meaner, with something inside me worn thin enough to make the whole day feel personal. I become a quietly damaged battery with legs. But the damage still feels like theft. It still feels imposed. I can hate it cleanly. I can point at the chair and the rep, then drag the city paperwork into daylight until the whole civic smile falls off the insult. The suffering does not have to flirt with its own audience. If I take the insomnia stream, the collapse moves right into the center of my identity. The worst nights become the brand. After that, the whole machine leans toward more of them until everybody is waiting for the crash and my own body starts learning the rhythm with them. Recovery starts looking bad for revenue, while anything quiet enough to help gets treated like waste. That losing side is not just sleeplessness. It is the training of the soul to see its own breakdown as inventory. That is much worse than plain theft. Theft can leave you angry. Inventory can make you complicit. That is the hinge for me. I can survive a visible enemy longer than I can survive becoming my own little content mine. If the city steals R E M sleep, I am still one pissed off bastard in daylight who knows where to aim the blame. If the stream gets me, every bad night starts teaching me to cooperate with the people feeding on it. That is how the trap gets deep. It stops feeling like a cage and starts feeling like a habit. Once that habit settles in, the door can stand open and the person still stays inside. So I choose R E M Donor. I choose R E M Donor because I would rather fight a fucking public utility that is draining my dreams than let some smiling platform ghoul teach my own sleepless breakdown to dance for subscribers. The city side is vile. I am not dressing it up. It steals the repair work out of the night and leaves me paying for it in my nerves. But the other side is worse because it turns collapse into a job and makes healing the enemy of the brand. That losing side is a humiliation machine with ring lights and chat overlays. That is why the stream loses. R E M Donor leaves me damaged and furious, but still able to point at the exact system feeding on me. The insomnia stream would make the worst nights of my life into a little monthly renewal cycle and teach me to protect the camera instead of myself. Give me the chair with the rep standing over it and a meter I can smash. Do not give me the smiling bastard who wants my breakdown archived, indexed, and sold back to me as connection. That's the fucking verdict. I made the call, and if your brain still works, you know where this lands.
