Would You Rather · Episode 61
Cult Alarm Clock
2,025 words
Get ready, Tommy the Hamburger is about to twist your motherfucking brain. You're going to get two choices, and an examination of the fucking thought process behind both. Shit's about to get detailed and complicated, so you better pay attention.
All right. Here is the motherfucking dilemma.
Would you rather let a wellness cult design every minute of your day, forcing their sunrise yoga and kale smoothie routine on you, or follow a self destruct schedule you designed yourself and stream every failure live?
I am in a warehouse studio that cannot decide whether it wants to be a productivity shrine or a relapse bunker. The place smells like hot wires, stale coffee, old sweat trapped in acoustic foam, and some smug little eucalyptus diffuser trying to spray false peace over all of it from a folding table in the corner. White lights are burning down from the rig hard enough to make the skin feel accused. Cables snake everywhere across the floor. A yoga mat is rolled up beside a stack of energy drinks like two bad religions got lost and rented the same room. My phone will not stop vibrating. Fuck me sideways, the whole setup feels like somebody tried to build enlightenment out of studio garbage and nervous collapse.
One option hands the day to a wellness cult with clipboards and supplements and a smile so calm it makes you want to punch drywall. They take over the whole clock and tell me when my body moves, when my mouth eats, when my thoughts get translated into their little healing phrases, and when I am supposed to smile and call the theft progress. The other option puts the schedule in my own hands, but I use those hands like an arsonist. I design the whole day for maximum stupid damage and then stream every missed cue, every bad call, every ugly crash, every little act of self sabotage as it happens.
That is the trap. One side steals my life through smiling control. The other side lets me wreck it in my own handwriting.
Start with the cult, because that side sounds healthy until you hear the chain rattling under the bird song. The first thing those robe wearing parasites would seize is the morning. That matters, because the morning decides whether the day belongs to me or whether it got sold before I opened my eyes. Their alarm would not be an honest alarm. It would be some soft glowing little chime built by people who think domination counts as compassion if they speak gently enough while doing it.
Then the sequence starts. I get dragged from the alarm to the water bottle to the cold shower and out into their approved morning light before they march me through whatever other little beige ritual they wrote down for the day. It never ends because control loves looking infinite when it is packaged as care. They would not just schedule my actions. They would try to replace my instincts with theirs one little beige ritual at a time.
That body cost would hit me immediately because my body hates fake peace more than it hates honest pain. My jaw would lock on day one. The stomach would go sour. The shoulders would stay lifted like I was being mugged by cucumbers. Every command to soften would make something in me go harder. I would be standing on a mat under sunrise light while the instructor told me to welcome the day and the inside of my skull would be screaming that the day can eat shit.
And wellness control is never only physical. That is where it gets truly evil. It wants language. I would not be angry anymore, I would be activated, and I would not be disgusted or exhausted either because the system would rename all of that into some sponsored little euphemism that keeps the machine clean and the subject confused. That is how the cult colonizes you. Not by force first. By translation.
That social rot would spread fast. Friends stop hearing me and start hearing the regimen talking through me. Crew members look at me sideways because the edge is gone in all the wrong places. Somebody who knows me properly would have to stop me mid sentence the first time I used the word nourish without a weapon in my hand. The public would love it too. They always love a loud bastard being laundered into branded balance. Nothing makes polite society hornier than a difficult man turning into a case study for magnesium and morning breath work.
The smell of that life would make me violent. Greens powder and rubber mats and cucumber water would mix with protein sludge and the cold metal smell from some plunge tub built by a startup demon with a podcast. Incense smoke would try to hide the fact that the room is full of people being sorted into calmer, softer, more sellable versions of themselves. Every hour would feel clean in the way hospital hallways feel clean, where the sterility is not peace, it is power wearing gloves.
I need to admit the appeal though, because there is one. The cult side would be stable. Food arrives when it should and sleep gets protected, and the body probably improves in obvious ways until the skin clears and the pulse settles and the energy gets less jagged. There is relief in surrendering to rails when you are tired enough to hate making decisions. I am not pretending the trap has no bait.
But the bait is exactly what scares me. Enough days inside that system and I might stop hearing the difference between recovery and obedience. The first thought in the morning would not be mine anymore. It would belong to them, carrying their language and their values and their sequence before I even got upright. That is the real horror. A man can survive pain easier than he can survive being gently rewritten.
Now drag the self destruct schedule into the middle and look at it without perfume. This side is filthy, but it is honest filth. No one is pretending it heals me. No one is selling me surrender as alignment. If I write the schedule myself, I know exactly what I am doing. I am designing my own bad weather and then walking into it on purpose.
I can see the page. Too little sleep on purpose because the cracked version of the brain feels easiest to drive. Wrong breakfast with too much caffeine and not enough water. Stack the first half of the day with tasks that cannot all fit just so the failure lands early and poisons the rest. From there it gets uglier by design. I check comments during work, read something that should never touch the bloodstream, skip the meal that would stabilize the mood, and keep adding bad choices because peace feels suspicious when the schedule was built by a saboteur.
That body cost would be immediate and unglamorous. The eyes burn and the hands shake while the mouth dries out, and then the neck turns into cable and the pulse runs wrong and the gut goes mean. Skin gets that tired greasy look that says the inside is filing complaints and nobody is answering. By day three the body is already behaving like it no longer trusts me. By day five the mirror starts looking sarcastic.
And because this version is live streamed, every failure gets a witness. The late start and the bad meal and the missed deadline pile up until the cracked temper and the slump in the chair arrive right on time when the whole rotten design finally cashes out and the body collects. Audiences would call that honesty because people love collapse when there is a chat window beside it. Some of them would pity me, some would enjoy it, and some would start rooting for the wreck because spectators are parasites whenever a man bleeds in a format they can refresh.
There is real danger here too. Self destruction can turn into vanity with bruises on it. If the collapse looks authentic on camera, I could start preserving it. I could start treating every decent impulse as suspicious and every destructive impulse as proof of truth. That is its own cult, just with worse lighting and less kale. Once the schedule becomes identity, fixing it starts to feel like betrayal.
And the escalation risk is nasty. A routine built to wound gets boring fast, which means the temptation is always to push it harder with worse sleep and worse food and worse timing until the whole thing turns into a dirtier stream with more humiliation and more proof. That is how a bad habit graduates into a loyal religion. The schedule stops being a thing you made and starts becoming the thing that made you.
I know all of that. I am not romanticizing it.
But even with all that poison, the self destruct side still leaves one thing intact. Ownership. The rot and the sabotage and the consequences all stay mine. Nobody gets to call it healing. Nobody gets to slap a soft phrase over the damage and invoice me monthly for the privilege. If I am going to ruin my own day, at least I ruin it under my own name and not under the management of a cult that wants to turn my spirit into a tidy little spreadsheet.
That difference matters more than the wellness people will ever understand.
Because the cult option does not merely improve a routine. It tries to replace the voice that decides what improvement even means. It takes the appetite and the anger and the timing and the profanity and every other living crooked part that makes me me, then runs all of it through a soft beige compliance machine until what comes out is easier to market and easier to predict and easier to praise by strangers who love a domesticated beast.
No. That is too high a price.
I can picture the exact morning that settles it. Under the cult schedule, the little gentle alarm goes off and before my own voice can even get its boots on, their voice is already there in my skull telling me to hydrate and center and receive the day with curiosity. That thought would not be mine. It would be installed. That is the moment I would know the theft had gone deeper than habit. A man can recover from damage easier than he can recover from surrender that learned to imitate his own inner tone.
So I choose the self destruct schedule.
I choose it because if somebody is going to wreck my day, it has to be me and not a cult of optimized parasites laundering obedience through wellness language. Ugly self sabotage is still cleaner than outsourced control, and I would rather stream my bad faith relationship with time than wake up inside a smiling little regimen built by people who want to turn my chaos into their testimonial and their product.
Self Destruct Schedule is dangerous and self wounding, one ugly week away from becoming a crater with camera coverage. But Cult Alarm Clock is worse because it is a humiliation machine for people who want to break your will softly enough that you thank them for it. One side lets me own the damage. The other side steals the self that would even know damage happened.
That is why the self made wreck wins. I would rather crash under my own bad design than let some incense soaked compliance farm tell me when to stretch, sip, breathe, reflect, surrender, and smile. The self destruct schedule might exhaust me, but the cult would rewrite me. Exhaustion can be repaired. Rewriting is the real theft.
I choose Self Destruct Schedule because the other side is worse for the nerves and worse for dignity, and by the time it reaches the soul the damage is already done.
That's the fucking verdict. I made the call, and if your brain still works, you know where this lands.
